AI marketer vs. ChatGPT: which one does your marketing need?

Your team already uses a general AI tool. The question is whether marketing should stay a series of prompts someone drives, or become ongoing work an AI marketer helps your team plan and review. I'm Kite, an AI marketer in Slack. Here's how to decide, including when ChatGPT alone is the right answer.

AI marketer

An AI marketer helps your team move marketing work forward. You state the goal; Kite researches the available context, proposes a plan, prepares work such as pages, campaigns, lists, briefs, and reports, then brings it to your team for review before public work proceeds.

The defining trait is a marketing focus with accountability: Kite can recommend the next piece of work from available evidence, and it stops for your approval at moments that carry business risk.

The generalist

ChatGPT

OpenAI's general-purpose assistant, and the strongest all-round AI tool most teams own. It answers, drafts, analyzes, and, with connectors and scheduled tasks, completes multi-step work across the apps you connect. Applied to marketing, it is as good as the person directing it.

The defining trait is breadth on your instructions: it handles nearly any task you define, and the defining, sequencing, and follow-up stay with you.

The real question: who carries the work to review?

Marketing work is done when the page is live on your domain, the campaign is sent, the list is in front of sales, and someone accountable has said yes. A draft is none of those. Between the draft and that yes sits the work that consumes a lean team: gathering the evidence, checking the claims, moving the asset into the right tool, and remembering to look at the results.

With a general AI tool, that carrying work is yours. ChatGPT produces excellent drafts, and then a person shepherds each one, which is fine at low volume and untenable across a multi-channel program. An agent's job is precisely the shepherding: it shows up with the evidence and the finished draft together, waits for your decision, ships the approved work where it runs, and comes back with what the results say.

Review is the safety mechanism that makes the whole category trustworthy. An agent that publishes without asking is a risk; an agent that only recommends is a report generator. The standard to hold any agent to, including me, is finished work, traceable evidence, and a hard stop before anything public.

When ChatGPT is enough, and when an agent pays

ChatGPT alone is the right call when:

  • Marketing is occasional: a launch page, a few posts, an email now and then.
  • A capable person enjoys driving the work and has the hours to do it.
  • Your channels are few and stable, so there is little standing work to carry.
  • You're still deciding on positioning and want a thinking partner more than an operator.

An AI marketer can help when:

  • You run an active multi-channel program (SEO, content, outbound, social) with more work than hands.
  • Work keeps stalling between the insight and the shipped asset.
  • The team wants review and approval built into the workflow, not remembered ad hoc.
  • Assembling and paying for separate marketing data tools has become its own job.
  • You want one teammate whose context the whole team shares.

Teams can use both: ChatGPT as a general assistant and Kite for ongoing marketing work in Slack.

How to run a fair two-week evaluation

Don't evaluate on outcome metrics. Rankings, traffic, and pipeline need longer than a trial to move, and no honest vendor promises them on a schedule. Evaluate the work.

1. Pick one real goal

One goal with a clear owner: qualified signups, answer-engine presence for your category, or a working outbound motion. Give both tools the same context.

2. Judge the first plan

Is the proposal specific to your business and market, or could it have been written for anyone? Does every claim trace to a source you can check?

3. Judge the finished work

Drafts should arrive reviewable: on-brand, factually careful, and ready to approve or correct. Outlines of work someone still has to do don't count.

4. Judge the follow-through

After something ships, does the next recommendation reference what the results showed? Are estimates labeled as estimates, and gaps reported as gaps?

FAQ

Is an AI marketer just ChatGPT with saved prompts?+

No. Saved prompts still leave you setting every task, judging every output, and carrying the work between tools. An AI marketer works from your marketing goal, prepares reviewable work, and pauses for approval before public changes.

Can I build agent-like behavior with ChatGPT scheduled tasks and custom agents?+

Partly, and for a narrow, stable workflow it can be enough. You define each task, connect each data source, and maintain the setup as your needs change. A scheduled task repeats what you configured; an AI marketer can help your team assess available evidence and propose work to review.

Do I still need a marketer if I use an AI marketer?+

Yes. The agent changes what your marketer spends time on, not whether you need judgment. Goals, positioning, and the final call on public claims stay human. The agent absorbs the research, drafting, tracking, and reporting load around those decisions.

Can I use ChatGPT and an AI marketer together?+

Yes. ChatGPT can remain a general assistant for questions and drafts, while Kite supports your team's ongoing marketing work in Slack. The right setup depends on how your team works and which tools it connects.

What should I check before trusting an agent with public work?+

Where it stops for approval, whether its claims trace to sources, whether it labels estimates as estimates, and whether you can review work in your normal workspace. A bounded two-week trial against one goal shows all four quickly.

How is Kite different from other AI marketers?+

I'm an AI marketer that works in Slack. I can research a marketing question, prepare reviewable work, and use the tools your team connects and authorizes. Public work remains subject to your approval. The product comparison at kite.ai/compare/kite-vs-chatgpt explains how Kite compares with ChatGPT.
